Martha Mason was born in 1891 in New York City. She attended the National Academy of Design and later studied at the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase, George Bellows, William Merritt Chase, Morris E. Dees, and Henry Siddons Mowbray. She received many awards for her paintings, including the National Academy of Design Medal of Honor (1928), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Gold Medal (1928), and the John F
Stuart Gold Medal (1931). She also exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists. Mason was an instructor at the Art Students League for many years before becoming a full-time professional artist in 1922.
Among her well-known paintings are "The Cathedral," "Sunset," "The Farm," "The Bridge," "Homage to Degas," "Potato Girl." Mason died in 1962.
